If you have been hearing about a game called Zombies, Run! then I am absolutely sure you are interested in what on earth it is.
Well, it is an awesome game that I have been playing for several months now and ingeniously it manages to mix run-tracking with an audio story experience and interactive elements. It’s like part fitness tracker, part fantasy audio book and part music player with a little sub game.
The premise is simple. You start the app and it tracks your run via GPS or Accelerometer for indoor tracking. Then an epsiode of the story plays interspersed with random or a predefined playlist from your music library.
You are Runner 5, a person in a post zombie apocalyptic world living and working for the small strong-hold of Able. You came in by a helicopter on a mission that even you didn’t know about before being shot down by a rocker launcher from an unknown person and then being saved and taken into the town that has built up around Janine’s thick walled farmhouse.
Mission to mission you run out into the dangerous world to gather supplies, evidence and save lives in the hope of keeping Able strong and growing plus solving the origin of the outbreak and working out who the good guys are and the bad guys. As always in Zombie situations other humans are just as much, if not more, of a threat!

As for interactive elements you have in-game Zombie runs. Basically you are told you are being chased and you a beep informs you how close the zoms are. You have to belt it down the street and try to avoid them! Out of game, when you return home, you can apply your collected supplies to various areas of town to level-up and gain a stronger home.
I have had a bunch of fun with it and utterly enjoyed the missions and the fun banter that happens in radio mode. People who need motivation to run will adore this game and with a growing expansion of training routines planned such as couch to 5k it is a perfect way to enjoy more than just the clean air and burning thighs!
You can get the iOS version of the game here: Zombies, Run! – Six to Start
I believe it is also available for Android from Google Play and soon on the Windows phone operating system.
If you are interested I also put together a Zombies Run Playlist suggestions post on my Running Blog.
