Rodney King Case: Where Are They Now? – 20 years ago today the famous case of the Rodney King beating was filmed by George Holiday. The case changed the world and brought the power of public video to the forefront of the media. Ever since activists have been relying on recording events as one of the main forms of showing injustice in this world. King did so something wrong as he fled the police after being caught speeding but I think we can all agree the brutality he underwent was completely wrong. Sadly police brutality is surprisingly still a problem 20 years on.
Rodney King Case: Where Are They Now?
I can’t believe 20 years has gone by! Thankful King was not killed but he has not been without problems and not everything has been rosy for everyone involved. So let’s take a look at where they are now.
Rodney King was in his mid 20′s at the time and now at 46. 5 years ago he was known to be working at a construction company and more recently he appeared on VH1′s Celebrity Rehab programme as she still suffers from problems related to substance abuse.
Holiday is the man who bravely committed the beating to tape and brought a new form of activism to the forefront of the media. It proved to be a very important piece of citizen journalism. He sold the footage to local TV and from there on the whole thing exploded. At 50 he works in plumbing and tries to keep his life private.
Police Sgt. Stacey Koon
Stacey Koon, the superior officer at the scene, is now 60 and living off the proceeds of his book named Presumed Guilty, which was released in 1992. Although originally acquitted he gained a conviction in ’93 for federal civil rights violations. Since his ’95 release from prison he has laid pretty low.
One of the four officers arrested for beating Rodney, Powell ended up spending 30month in jail. He is 48 and retired from police work.
Another of the officers who was arrested for the beating, Briseno never found work with the police again but was acquitted in all trials.
Wind was also acquitted in all trials but was fired in 1994. He ended up working as a community service officer and it is presumed this is what he still does.

Rodney King Case: Where Are They Now? – Did people get off too lightly?
The outcomes of the 2 cases are still controversial and the officers are still seen to have more or less gotten away with it from many peoples POV. I want to know what you think?
Personally I think what they did was terrible and they should have all been given jail time on first run. Being a polci officer is an important job and they all clearly misused their power. I would hope they are still living with their own guilt to this day and wish that they are using it to positively reinforce a better view point on any younger generation surrounding them.
