Outdoor Space Decorating – It’s more and more common for outdoor spaces to be a kind of extension of the home, especially if you live in a place with more than a few days of summer each year. Often these spaces can end up being a sterile concrete blocked area with a simple table and chair set up but if it’s a space you want to love being in then thinking carefully about it’s decoration is worth your time. In the summer months you may find yourself living outside if it feels like home…
So where do you start?
Of course outdoor spaces have challenges. Anything you put up has to be able to face certain elements or be easily removed and stored during the bad weather months, things need to help bring openness to the space or comfort depending on your needs. But it’s outdoors so things like plants, water features and things you couldn’t dream of having in your home can be implemented.
First you need to establish what the space will be used for? It could be simply a spot for grilling and eating / drinking. It could be a multi-purpose space, one you will use for morning yoga, afternoon tea and maybe even sleep on very nice nights.
Imagine what you would really love to have in this space, hammocks, a grill, a mini bar, decorations and ornaments from your travels whatever you feel would make you just want to be out there. Start gathering the items you have ane imagining how they can fit in the space without it just becoming clutter. You may find that you start with a huge list that slowly simplifies and becomes a more sparse, but still reflective of your personality, list with a functional element.
Material items such as hardy drapes and knotted rugs can be laid out and you could consider outdoor pillows and love seats to make it a lounge space that can be easily reconfigured with items able to be removed for cleaning. Bare surfaces should be able to be brushed with a broom and washed with a mop and bucket and pressure washer at the beginning of the season.
Of course you may not be a ‘spacial’ designer and you could make a pigs ear of the whole thing so I suggest that you mimic where possible. A simple google image search for outdoor spaces brings up some beautiful images and endless great ideas and will help you establish something great to mimic but bend to your needs and personality.
Good luck and please share your thoughts and ideas.
