Mexican car described as ‘lazy, feckless, flatulent’ by Top Gear team

Mexican car described as ‘lazy, feckless, flatulent’ by Top Gear team – A host of the popular show ‘Top Gear’ described the Mexican car and people as ‘lazy, feckless, and flatulent’ on a recent show. Needless to say, this didn’t go over well when it became known by authorities in the UK representing the Mexican people. In fact, it was the Mexican ambassador in London that made the complain formally to the BBC. He called the comments “xenophobic” and “offensive”.

Ambassador Eduardo Medina-Mora Icaza has demanded an apology from Richard Hammond on the air over the BBC network. The Top Gear show is one of the more popular shows on the station and draws millions of viewers.

Mexican car described as ‘lazy, feckless, flatulent’ by Top Gear team

But when the discussion of a Mexican car came up on the show, things didn’t go well from there. They were discussion the Mexican sports car, the Mastretta. This is when Hammond said: “”Why would you want a Mexican car? Because cars reflect national characteristics don’t they?” He continued with, “Mexican cars are just going to be lazy, feckless, flatulent, overweight, leaning against a fence asleep looking at a cactus with a blanket with a hole in the middle on as a coat.”

As if this wasn’t enough, the co-host Clarkson, who has been criticized for making offensive comments on the programme, went on to describe Mexican food as “refried sick.” You might have thought they stopped there, but continued yet again. Saying on Sunday’s show there would be no complaints this time because the Mexican ambassador would: “be sitting there with a remote control like this,”. The presenter pretended to slump in a chair, snoring.

This is just proof that everyone on television is not intelligent and bigotry still exist in the world. The BBC said that more than 500 people have called in to complain about the comments that have been made.

The BBC said: “We have received a letter from the Mexican ambassador, and shall respond to him directly.”

Good for the BBC. Hopefully, they will take it one step further and fire these bastards for making such remarks. Sometimes organizations have to take a stance against nonsense like this. People must understand their words carry consequences. You cannot go around just offending people because you have a microphone and are on television.

I understand the point of the Top Gear show is entertainment, but that can be done with some decency. If they didn’t care for the Mexican sports car, then they could have just said so. There was no need to attack a whole people because of your racist viewpoints on the world around them. This narrow mindedness must never be accepted. I for one would like to see the BBC fire them from the show. I get that it is a popular show, but that is because of the name of the show, time slot on the BBC and their marketing, not the host. Maybe when they find themselves out on their butts, then they will get some respect.

At this point, we need to hear from you. Chime in and let us know what you think about the situation. What do you think the BBC should do? But most, tell us what you think about Mexican car described as ‘lazy, feckless, flatulent’ by Top Gear team.

Perhaps you should realise that the BBC do not own Top Gear, nor can they fire any of the presenters. Jeremy Clarkson owns the rights to the programme and sells it to the BBC. If the BBC did not buy it, then they would be letting BBC2′s biggest attraction (in viewing numbers) go to the next highest bidder.

I personally find it funny that someobody still has the guts to stand up and insult people. They insult americans, british sports cars, Germans, geeks, and of course each other.

Grow up and get a life – not everything everyone says is meant to be taken seriously. But in this case, I think they’re probably right…!

The BBC should write to him and explain where the the red button is on the remote.

This is just a case of Political Correctness gone mad. We can’t say ‘Paki’ or ‘Gypsy Creams’ any more. No, it as to be ‘Pakisatini’ and ‘Romany Creams’.

What’s all that about? No longer can I pop down to my corner shop for a packet of buscuits for fear of offending people.

Well, here’s my take on Politcal Correctness.

It seems to me that the fundemental principle governing the operation of Political Correctnes, is in protection of the minority, right?. And now, every minority is protected. So, politically non-correct people, such as the Top Gear Team (and me) are now in the minority, right again?

Accordingly, we can now stick two fingers up to the people who complain about our comments, and they can’t do a thing about it – because we’re in the minority and we’re protected, by their rules. Cool or what?

I agree that it’s time people quit hiding what they really want to say because they don’t want to “offend” a particular race. Heck any night of the week you can watch comedians of all races making fun of other races and even their own. You don’t see the Mexican government sending requests for apologies every time George Lopez and Carlos Mencia talk about the Mexicans standing out front of the Home Depot.

Maybe if the Mexicans and their so called government had a little more respect for themselves they wouldn’t be joked about so much.

If you think thats true then your hella stupid. Several Mexicans cross the border to the United States to pick vegetables for like ten cents a vegi. I am Mexican and i have staight A’s in high school, I work 30 hours a week at a grocery store, and I’m one of the best soccer players in my town. My father started working at the local processing mill and he got a raise after a month.

      Reply
      • Zander says:

Well you obvisouly never learned to proofread in your school, since there are numerous errors in your grammar. The ten cents per vegi. that mexicans are getting for picking shouldn’t even be that since most of them are in the country illegally. The people paying them to pick should have their butts thrown in jail and be stripped of their business license for harboring illegal immigrants. As for your father getting a raise after a month on the job… That’s typical of any job in America. If you make it past the 30 day probation period, then you get a raise. There’s nothing special about this. As for you being the best soccer player in your town and working 30 hours a week… It doesn’t matter if your good or bad. You apparently don’t play for your school. If you did, the school would be in violation of the scholastic athletic rules and guidelines for anyone under the age of 18. Your prohibited from working more than 20 hours a week. Students who don’t participate in their schools athletics, may work up to 25 hours a week if approved by parents. Again, this is a national law.

As for the mexican people… If they want to build a better life for themselves, they need to start by having some balls and stand up against their government. That’s where all their problems are at. They aren’t going to fix any of their problems by running from them. Also, a LARGE (over 80 percent)majority of the American people have made it very clear that we don’t want you here.

All these people on here saying it’s disgraceful, and they should be ashamed of themselves really do need their heads looking at. We live in a world filled with disasters, pollution, genocide, famine and pestilence and you really have nothing better to do with your time than complain about a few comments made by an entertainment show?! A show, by the way, you obviously know little about. Were you to be more aware of the show you would realise that it is NOT the time it is aired, the title or the marketing that make the show popular, IT IS THE HOSTS! This is because they are known to be controversial in their attitude towards car manufacturers, countries and even individuals. If you don’t like their comments, which I very much doubt you yourself heard at the time of the broadcast, then watch something else.
Some of us find the show entertaining and informative. I admit that sometimes the hosts will make remarks which are made JOKINGLY, they are not politicians attempting to agitate a nation, they are a trio of overgrown schoolboys having fun. For them to be considered as anything but entertainers is pointless, and to be chastized by a country that is so over-run with corruption and crime, perhaps the Mexican Ambassador should concern himself more with matters of state and helping sort out the crime in his own country instead of sitting in front of the television complaining about popular TV shows.

Or did you not even watch the show? People like you have made this country into a ‘pc’ nanny state with everyone afraid to say what they like in case someones dog gets offended.
HAVE YOU NOT HEARD OF FREE SPEECH?
I love TG because of the outspoken views of the presenters and, wait for it, the cars as well! It just would be another boring car show without the comments made by Clarkson and co. If you actually watched the show over a series or 2 you would see that everyone gets stick at some point or another. Clarkson got in trouble before with a joke about lorry drivers murdering prostitutes, did the worlds lorry drivers start crying? NO. Bad taste joke= extremely funny entertainment.
Before you start ranting about intelligence and lack of respect, maybe you should do some proper research before blogging. GET OFF YOUR F***ING SOAPBOX and do something useful with your time.

  53. So in that case, from what your saying, all of those old cartoons that are still shown that depict Mexicans as described by Hammond and Clarkson should also be banned from TV?

Yes it is a stereotype, but every country has a stereotype. I think next time an Irishman is on the TV drinking I will complain. I’m Irish, and the depiction of an Irishman drinking I feel is also racist and xenophonic. Sadly, I think if you were to ask people what they thought of Mexico, they wouldn’t be coming out saying they are anything other than what was described on Top Gear. At the end of the day, I honestly don’t think the comments were racist. If they were, there would be a hell of a lot more complaints rather than the poultry 500 that has been received. Remember, Top Gear pulls in 9 million viewers a week. Whats 500 in comparison to that?

As for this article, it’s just bad/lazy journalism. No professionalism in it either. If it was professional, the words “fire those bastards” would never be used. Obviously, this may go some way to reason why the writer is writing on a website and not for a top newspaper… like Jeremy Clarkson “the bastard”.

What most of the easily-offended commentators fail to see in cases like this is the humour is aimed more at casual attitudes towards nationalities (or whatever the subject matter is) than it is towards the nations themselves. Hammond was poking fun at the sterotypical image of Mexicans than he was at Mexicans themselves. I bet most of those who complained also thought Ali G was racist and that that Brass Eye special was actually poking fun at paedophilia.

For the record, I find this sort of humour pant-wettingly hilarious.

The really offensive one is the author of this article describing the Top Gear presenters as “bastards”. The implication here is taht all individuals born out of wedlock are ignorant racist scum. The word “bastard” means an illegitimate child – to use it as a perjorative as most people do is trully vile. No-one can help the situation of their birth, and most “bastards” are no better nor worse that most “non-bastards”.

For crying out loud – get a life and a sense of humour. There is a huge difference between remarks made to incite racila/religious hatred, and remarks made in honest jest. I am a Geordie, and if I took offence every time someone made a stereotypical remark about me or my origins, I would be huffing and puffing until I belw everyone’s house down!

It’s the right to make such remarks which have actually made Britain the tolerant and (still) wonderful society it is to live in – why else would people not just flood into this country, but be very largely accepted and welcomed? One of the first things any dictatorship does to control the population, is ban any humour and mickey-taking. That is because such remarks expose truths in society, and because they enable people actually to bod together in mutual mickey-taking and enjoy their exchange of humour. The Mexican Ambassador would have been a lot wiser to have replied with a steroetypical comment about the British (I don’t know – maybe that the team like big cars because they are compensating for something) – Hammond et al would have been fine with that, and so would the rest of us and there would have been no bad feeling. I tend to think that if someone protests too much, it is because the truth has hit home . . .

mexicans should not worry about these negative comments about Mexcan cars. They should rather endeavour to improve upon them. the same butt of jokes were made about the Japanese when they started making Datsun and Toyota cars but nobody mocks Datsun (now Nissan) and Toyota now. All such statements are signs of deep seated fear by Western folks of what Mexicans can do with their low cost of production and technological advancements. Like bullying, if you are the object of racist jokes it appears very funny but not the person being attacked.
The admonishing of people to change the channel if they dont like it, is stupid. Let some sit on British television to insult the queen and then if you dont like it, you may change it.

So many people feel very strongly on both sides…I am white, and have a 10-year-old son. My son’s best friend is a boy who lives across the street, and his family happens to be from Mexico. They have a wonderful family, very industrious, hard-working, and the opposite of lazy. They own a Mexican food restaurant, and personally, I love Mexican food. It is one of my favorites. They are just one family out of millions, and do not necessarily represent the Mexican people, but to me they are just a nice family with good values, just like so many other families, and color is not the deciding factor. I think as a whole the Mexican people are tenacious and hard working and not at all lazy. I like them. I am not a fan of illegal immigration, and I do think it is going to be the downfall of the United States. There can only be so much drain on an economy without being refueled, and the people who are contributing to the coffers here in the U.S. are outnumbered by those who take services but have never contributed, like the illegals. But the same can be said for white and black drug addicts, alcoholics, or just plain lazy people who do not want to work. For the Mexican people who are here legally, bravo. We need more people like them in general, regardless of where they come from. I do not think the Top Gear hosts should be fired, but I do think they should apologize, and maybe tone down the sweeping statements of an entire race. Of course, any publicity is good publicity! It is supposed to be funny, not to be taken seriously.
