Melbourne Motorway Sheep – A truck carrying 400 sheep toppled over on a motorway overpass just outside of Melbourne Thursday night. Drivers on the road below the overpass were forced to screech to a halt or be hit by ‘raining sheep’– while many others veered off the road in an attempt to avoid being hit by the wooly creatures.

Fortunately, Australian police reported no human casualties. Many of the sheep, however, were not so lucky.

The truck, which was travelling to Geelong, slammed into the wall of the Princess Freeway. It is still unclear what caused the driver to crash and cause sheep to ‘rain’ down on the motorway.

In an interview with the Associated Press, a paramedic on the scene of the sheep crash, Allan Eade, said:

“This is quite an unusual event. First of all we looked up and we could see the truck flip on its side and the next minute we were underneath and well yeah it rained sheep.”

While the image of sheep ‘raining’ from the sky might be somewhat amusing, footage of the aftermath is stomach turning. Hundreds of sheep were killed when the truck toppled over and precariously hung from the motorway bridge. It was most likely a terrifying last few minutes for the creatures, with those who survived the fall only to be forced to scramble to safety throughout oncoming traffic. Hopefully it is a story that won’t repeat itself anytime in the near future.
