The legal dispute with workers from his restaurants was over withheld tips. The suit began in July 2010 and it was reported to have finally been settled for $5.25 million.
Why so much? Well it’s said to represent compensation for what was described as “pervasive, illegal pattern of tip skimming. They say that Batali’s restaurants, among other misdeeds, took four to five percent of tips given to servers for alcohol and wine sales to pay sommeliers’ salaries.” according to the Huffington Post.
The cash was made available to restaurants servers, captains, waiters, bussers, runners, back waiters, bartenders and barbacks who worked in the restaurants between July 22 2004 until Feb 14th 2012. Thos who opted out of settlement were not entitled.
It was quite a large suit! More details can be read in the Huffington Post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/07/mario-batali-lawsuit_n_1325304.html
