Man mistakenly shoots leopard to protect cats – People will do anything to protect the ones they love and that extends to harming another being in the pursuit for the safety of those closest. Now, people love cats, I mean they really love cats and a spate of attacks against cats and dogs in Indiana led to one woman wanting action to be taken.
It was believed that a bob cat, mountain lion, catamount, whatever you want to call it was responsible for the spate of attacks on man’s best friend and man’s most beloved enemy (yes I mean dogs and cats).
Donna Duke and her partner had taken to guarding their home because they didn’t want their family pets, who were basically family, to be victims of the attacker, the believed bobcat.
The bobcats was intercepted and shot Donna says by a friend of her partner who wants to remain anonymous.
However on inspection the bobcat turned out to be a leopard, identified as probably around 9-months old by Phil Bloom, director of communications for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, who was shown photos of the animal by WDRB News.
WDRB News obtained the photos from Donna Duke. Here is one of the photos supplied by Donna to WDRB.
More photos and details can be see on WDRB.
Where did this leopard come from?
The most likely candidate is a nearby wildlife refuge, however they have said the cat was not theirs. That means it was likely a pet, although illegal there is a law that native people can own leopards if they have a permit. Leopards are certainly not native in North America so this is an interesting and of course sad case.
Bobcat or leopard the fact that a beautiful large cat has been shot and killed is of course upsetting. Sadly that animal was harming other animals so it was a tough position for people fearing for their pets.
We can only wish the local dept responsible could have captured the animal alive and dealt with it in the correct manner.
It’s quite scary to think there could be more cats like this out there!
