Did you know June was Gay Pride Month! Not just a day but a whole month. And we say, why the hell not. Being Gay and being able to say that without fear is a goal for many and people should be proud of what they are.
Parades, workshops and events will be happening throughout the month across the USA.
So why did Gay Pride Month find it’s way to the month of March? Well in 1969 an incident happened that pretty much kicked off the gay pride movement. The Stonewall Riots, were the LGBT community started to stand up agains the corrupt authorities and be proud of who they were and the rights they should have had to do that.
Everything started in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969. A well known gay bar, the Stonewall Inn, was raided by police in yet another discriminatory raid. This time instead of quietly standing down the patrons decided to resist arrest. The sight must have been one to behold with drag queens chasing police with high heels as one of the more comical moments of a very sad and important incident.
This led to a series of riots, often violent, known as the Stonewall Riots.
