Ida Valentine is suing the 99 Cents Only store where she slipped on banana peel – A California woman, Ida Valentine, is suing the 99 Cents Only store because this is where she slipped on a banana peel. It’s true, this sounds like something out of a cartoon, but it is real life.
The woman’s name is Ida Valentine, age 58. She was minding her own business at the 99 Cents Store walking down the isle. On the floor was a banana peel. She stepped on it, lost her balance, and fell to the ground. She was injured in the incident.

Ida Valentine is suing the 99 Cents Only store where she slipped on banana peel
Valentine suffered a serious injury in the fall in April of 2010 when she slipped on the banana peel in the 99 Cents Only store. She herniated a disk in her back and received some tissue damage as well. She is suing the store for damages.
Valentine’s medical expenses are starting to pile up and she is looking for compensation as a result. So far, her medical bills has reached $9,000, but the amount of the lawsuit hasn’t been told to the public.
“She fell and landed on her backside,” said Courtney Mikolaj of the Quirk Law Firm in Ventura, California, which is representing her.
The 99 Cents Only store in Fontana, California didn’t accept a $44,000 settlement put on the table by Valentine’s lawyers according to Mikolaj. The deep discount retailer mainly has stores in the wester United States and apparently willing to take the time and resources to fight this case. The don’t feel like they are responsible for Valentine’s injuries.
Personally, I thought slipping on a banana peel is something that only happened in the cartoons like Tom & Jerry. I grew up watching them all the time. Tom was determined to catch Jerry, but every so often there would be a fortunately placed banana peel, which Tom would slip on and fall.
If you have ever watched the cartoon, you know Tom wouldn’t just fall down and injure himself. Tom would slide through the entire home, ripping down curtains, lamps, pictures, food, dishes, everything in the home he could reach for the comedic value. Those were good times during my childhood.
Obviously, the Ida Valentine lawsuit against the 99 Cents Only store isn’t a laughing matter. Valentine did suffer a serious injury, plus there is money and liability on the line. It’s not a laughing matter or a joke, but to the outside observer it does take you back to your childhood of watching cartoons.
It is my hope that cooler heads prevail and both sides can workout their differences. It is now up to the courts to decided because Ida Valentine is suing the 99 Cents Only store where she slipped on banana peel.
