How to make friends at work – Work can be lonely if you are shy, have no one to chat too and eat your lunch alone! Making friends, especially if tight knit groups are established can be tough.

So how on earth do you even begin to start making friends in the work place?
First off being shy isn’t going to help but if you are having problems then shyness may well be the issue, obviously not easy to break! Anyway let’s get onto some plans.
Workplace friendships often start with simple conversations. Make sure you say hi to everyone and make time for small talk (not gossip though). Don’t hide away during break times and if ever invited into a conversation make sure you engage fully and don’t shy away.
Other little helpers are being friendly and open when it comes to doing people favors. If you are making a cup of coffee see if anyone else wants one. Popping to the shops? Ask if anyone needs anything. The favors will be returned most likely and people will start chatting with you.

Be sure to keep a positive attitude. It’s easy to complain about the weather, being tired, not being happy with a project and such things but don’t as it will likely repel people you don’t know well.
Also be an ear, it’s not all about you talking. So, let people talk at you and if you feel they are being negative or are upset try to help them feel better. Offer to talk with them over lunch or even a drink in the bar after work if you have time.
Make sure you engage in any work social events, it may just be friday night drinks or a team building weekend away. Whatever opportunity you get jump at it.
Making friends will come over time and some people will click, others won’t. Don’t get too worried or stressed over it and have some fun. Friendships always take a while!
