How many rubber bands does it take to blow up a watermelon? – Oh the questions that we have to ask! A watermelon isn’t the hardest fruit in the world but it would take some might to crush one!
How many rubber bands does it take to blow up a watermelon?
It seems this question has been being asked for some time and a video that is recently doing the rounds seems to answer the question, at least for that particular watermelon.
The video from 2008 shows some guys in what appears to be an office room in Korea putting elastic bands around the center of a watermelon 1 by 1. There were rumors that just 50 bands could make a watermelon explode but in the video they managed to put on a little over 500 before the fruit exploded creating a scene that looked like it had come from American Psycho.
You can see the video and their awesome reaction to the explosion below.

Now of course this video is a few years old and was an experiment carried out on just one watermelon which still means the question has not been fully answered and maybe that watermelon was an anomaly.
Maybe some melons would go bang on just a few bands, maybe some hundreds more and I am sure people across the world are up to the task of ruining their meeting rooms on dress down friday to help settle the question with a larger sample so we can confidently say it takes xxx bands to explode a watermelon!
I do think they should have been wearing safety googles though but us Brits are obsessed with health and safety!
I wonder how many rubber bands it takes to explode a coconut! Please don’t try that at home!
