Elizabeth Davies sprayed kids who smelled of curry - Elizabeth Davies is being accused of having sprayed kids with air fresher who smelled of curry. This is an unbelievable story that is coming out of the UK today. If true, the bond between parent and teacher could forever be altered.
The word is a preschool teacher with more than 20 years experience routinely sprays air freshener on children in her class. She says the children stink and smells of curry. The children in question are considered Asian, but of Indian, Pakistanis, and Bangladeshis decent.

According to the The Daily Mail, Elizabeth Davies, 48 years old, would humiliate the children of her class as they entered the classrooms each morning. She teaches very young children from the tender age of 3 years old on up. But as they would enter she would accuse them of smelling like curry or onions, something that was unacceptable in her classroom.
“If a child came in smelling of onion or curry she would say, ‘There is a waft coming in from paradise,’” nursery school assistant Jan Islam told the tribunal.
“She would spray air freshener almost daily,” Ms Islam said. “If they had broken wind she would stand above them and spray air freshener at them.”
Ms Islam, who spoke to the tribunal, claimed that Ms. Davies only picked on the children that did not speak English as their first language. This represents over 50% of the students in the classroom as most were Bangladeshi. It is important to not that Ms. Davies claims her innocents and did not speak to the tribunal.
Now that the reporting is over, I have a few comments to make on this story. There are just some things that don’t seem right and some things that are just unbelievable that as a parent I wouldn’t be able to accept. Let’s go through my list of feelings as I heard about this story.
#1 Smash Ms Davies - Let me just say that if this were my children that Ms. Davies, if this is even true, were spraying air freshener on each morning there would be a major problem. And let me just tell you that I wouldn’t go to the tribunal for a discussion. I would approach the woman myself and at the very least spray something on her as well. My reasoning would be that her attitude stinks.
#2 Why Teach There? - For the life of me, I don’t understand why a person would teach there for so long if she didn’t like the people or culture that was moving into the city. My guess is that she started teaching there 20 years ago when a different demographic was in the city, but now that there are others moving in she isn’t able to handle the transition well. If this is the case, then it is time for Ms. Davies to pick up a move. These babies don’t deserve this type of treatment.
#3 What Took So Long? – Now, allow me to defend Ms. Davies because all of this doesn’t add up to me. Think about it. If this was her daily routine, then what took Ms. Islam so long to report her behavior. How come on the first day or week or month, she didn’t say something? That stinks to me.
Secondly, the kids may not be able to speak English, but their parents are able to communicate with them in their native tongue. How come none of the children said anything to the parents about Ms. Davies spraying them with something? I know my children tell us what happens the entire day with them at school, so it is a bit difficult for me to believe that no one stepped up and said anything.

This complaint is clearly yet another attempt to find fault with someone or something about this country, that the non-indigenous inhabitants living here will use to complain about. If Ms Islam is so unhappy she could always go back to where her family roots lie. I am sick of hearing complaints from foreigners about this country and whatever goes on here. Instead of coming here to enjoy the way of life that has been built by our forefathers, they should stay where they came from and work at improving their own countries way of life, instead of coming here where they dont have to make any effort and get an easy life.

You have a point, but maybe your forefathers should of left other countries alone, instead of tampering with them…and by the way maybe you should learn from their mistakes and ask the non-indigenous inhabitants who originate from your heritage to remove all traces commercial and social from their original counties, so they can go back home without any links and then that way you get what you want, visa versa… I’m pretty sure they don’t mind going back to their sunny counties, like am sure many people wouldn’t mind coming back to lovely rain and snow.
Well said Graham, It’s true its almost a love hate situation, they hate being discrimated against, but love using it to their advantage. Curry is such a strong smell in most cases it would be offputting if it wasn’t a normal smell in your own household. Its wrong to spray pupils with air freshner, but it isn’t wrong to want to combat the issue of the smell. Perhaps a general room air freshner would have worked better.

Your opinion is widely supported across the UK, most people are frightened of coming forward of saying it as the OLD racist card is just ready and waiting to be waved at them.
The classroom is run by the teacher and if children are coming to school stinking of farts,currys or onions then that teacher has every right to spray airfresnener towards them. The parents should be mortified that their children behave in this manner or that they send them to school minging.
This is our UK that these people have come to live in it is only right that they should adjust their lives to fit our nation. We have seen many examples of how we Brits have to adapt to muslim customs when traveling abroad.

not sure what you mean about not having to make an effort, Graham. I’ve lived and worked with children and families across the UK and lazy is not a word that comes to my mind about any whole group of people, certainly not if you’re grouping them according to race.
Fact: The Brits when they came to India did did not know how to bathe and certainly washed rarely (in Britain) because of cold, uncomfortable bathrooms and scarce hot water.Their Indian wives and girlfiriends taught them hygiene, how to use a loofah, etc. But more Brits in Britian eat curry than the Asians…. The Asian community is really v small. And most artificial airfreshners smell awful and are bad for you besides.

Hmm, maybe the school should have rules that pupils have to come to school clean, not using too strong parfume or spice scent, because another pupils might be allergic to it, then this issue could be solved easier , parents could be called to school and explained the problem. You are so right Graham! I live in Vancouver BC, Canada, which is now mostly Asians (Chinese) and they do NOT adapt to the Canadian lifestyle and every time they do not get their way, cry racism. You people do not understand what happens when your own culture that was built hundreds of years and in some cases, thousands of years ago, is stripped from you. WE are supposed to adapt to them? Since when? If I went to China and declared their Chinese New Year was offensive, would they stop celebrating it publicly in the schools? How about the malls? Would they take down their decorations? Well the Chinese in Vancouver declared they were uncomfortable with Christmas trees and decorations in the malls and found it offensive and now we don’t have anything like that in local shopping centres anymore. The British (and French) did not adopt to the cultures they encountered in what is now Canada. They set the example of forcing the indigenous people to adopt the newcomers’ ways. So, subsequent newcomers may simply follow the British example in Vancouver. “When you move in, do not follow the customs of the locals. Leave your own stamp and make the locals conform to your ways.” If it was good for the British, is it not good for the Chinese? Why not?

NO ONE smellsof curry or kippers or eels if they bathe or brush. Hard boiled egg smell is the worst, not to mention boiled cabbage. Oh well.
I have worked with people whos stank of curry and spices, I love a good curry but the stale smell of it on peoples clothing and sweating from their pores turns my stomach. I would find I would just start retching when the wind caught them rite. I complained to them no end to which they would just laugh, so I also started bringing air freshner in with me, which also smells horrid but made a change from spice and body odour. With this diet in their natural countries it is not a problem what with the stench of the streets etc..
Clothes carry smells because cold weather clothes like coats are harder to launder often. Bathed bodies do not smell but many may not have access to good bathrooms or heated homes.
I do believe that this teacher was well within her rights, she does have the right to not work in an un-pleasant environment, sorry but if I was faced with smelly children I would have retro fitted the classroom with Air-Wick automatic sprays so as to avoid this exact thing happening, sorry but my thoughts are with this poor teacher
I agree that she has the right not work in such a smelly environment but spraying kids with air freshener is not the right reaction. Personally, I feel dizzy with and vomit from strong odours/scents, curry/chemicals, etc. She should just have discussed the situation with parents in a professional manner or better yet teach the kids better hygiene such as taking a shower before going to school and giving notices to their parents about washing their jackets/clothes well and making sure they don’t smell like curry when they come to school. After all, it’s part of her job. I’m South-East Asian and all my teachers (Asians, as well) from the lowest grade until university taught and instilled in us proper hygiene but none of us humiliated us in such a way.

No problem here at all! The staff at the newspaper reading room of a local opublic libray used to spary air freshnener into the room which used to stink as a result of unwashed old men spending hours in the place. Perhaps she should have been reported to the Council for the Right of Old Men to Stink and Pollute the Atmosphere!!
Personally ,I detest all food from the Indian Sub-continent (note this expression – not ASIAN – please!). It makes me want to vomit. So if I was working in the school I would agree to anything that remove the stinky smells! And God do some children stink! I know I used to be a teacher for 25 years!
But the best way of removing the stinks is not to have these people here anyway. And I couldn’t care less if they were born here! We made a big big mistake in letting their parents in in the first place.

It seems to me there are faults all round:
1. The assistant did not report it immediately.
2. The Headteacher, if they knew about it, did nothing; OR the Headteacher knew nothing about it, in which case why not?
3. The issue of personal hygiene was being ignored by some parents, which is not a good start in life for the children anyway.
4. The teacher should have reported the matter to her superiors and, if she did spray the children, she was acting very wrongly.
As a teacher for many years, including in some immigrant areas where the population was 90% Asian or more, I have found that children are the cruellest judges when it comes to such matters. The smell of stale food such as onions, garlic, curry, chilli, or other strongly spiced foods, is not pleasant. As a garlic addict I always made sure that my own hygiene was up to scratch before going into school.
But yet again a teacher is demonised before all the evidence has been given to the tribunal. She has been tried, convicted and sentenced, accused of being racist when the issue is one of personal cleanliness and social acceptability, and yet again people are on either side of the barricades of immigration: one side that says go home, and the other that says everyone is racist against us if we don’t like something.
So how do we resolve it?
1. Accept that racism happens against white people as well as black and Asians.
2. Accept that things go wrong because people are fallible – sometimes very unwise and ill thought out behaviour takes place, as is reported here.
3. STOP using the word racism for every little criticism.
4. Try talking to each other – this school’s governors needs to look again at how this problem is dealt with, perhaps organise workshops on what the school expects from parents and pupils in terms of personal hygiene.
5. Work on integrating ghetto areas into multi-ethnic areas, where all people can live and get on.
This is Britain, we do speak English, it is a nominally Christian country, we do like our children to learn about and celebrate Christian festivals in the same way as other faiths’ festivals, we do like hard working people who are willing to be part of OUR shared community rather than forming anti-social single culture communities based on race, religion, status (and the British are so good at doing that, hence areas like Westminster in London, and private schools), gender, sexuality etc.
When we ALL stop fighting over whose country this is and who is and is not welcome, perhaps we might find we have a lot more in common than it currently seems. And perhaps if we are ALL willing to learn and share it could once again be a great country that welcomes the diverse skills of EVERY member of its population.

Sexual orientation
Ms. Davies discriminated based on smell; which is, as far as I’m aware, legal.
***That one seems to only count over 18/21 though.
As far as I can tell however, the entire legislation is flawed, especially when one considers “Indirect discrimination”.
I KNOW the area concerned; the Hafod in Swansea, the demographics there have not changed in over 20 years, Ms Davies probably finds that the MINORITY in her classroom is WHITE and WELSH and not foreign.
So far as her actions are concerned, i don’t believe you have posted the article in FULL, yes she sprayed air freshener on and around children. She also made children that had wet themselves stand on newspaper until their parents collected them from the school as “we are not here to babysit the children”.
My point is this, teachers these days run the risk of abuse from the children they are supposed to teach on a daily basis, they are regularly abused by the parents. So what if one teacher stood up and made a stand about what she expected in her classroom. Years ago little Johnny or “Achmed” would have been sent home at the end of the day with a note telling his parents to WASH the child BEFORE sending him back to school.

What you are describing is the creation of Ghettoes.
Ironically the world already has something similar (but seemingly less socially destrucive) based on cuture, amongst other things; they’re called Nations.

She should go. To spray children with air freshener a) it’s poisonous and b) it’s humiliating for the child. Give her three months to find somewhere else, and replace her with someone who is sane. my mother-in-law used to spray the bathroom after i had need to visit the wc when my wife and me visited their home needless to say the marriage never lasted and they became infamously known as The Outlaws. A then local landlady knew i was in the pub after work because she could smell the garlic and before she saw me she was pulling me a pint. the trick with garlic is to cut the clove in half and remove the little (usually) green core and discard it then the so-called offensive smell is diminished. furthermore, many years ago when you landed in transit, ie you did not disembark, at an Indian airport you were sprayed by usually a very beautiful air hostess as they walked the aisle presumably to deal with any airborne bacteria. then, yes! there’s more there are several local Asian shopkeepers who will not put your change in your hand, they drop it on the counter. this is because they are not allowed (!) to touch the skin of an infidel. all this i have put up with. but little children? feeding them prejudice is worse than feeding them pungent food.

Why is it a question of racism? If I move to China should I expect the Chinese to adapt to my ways (and smells) or is it for me to adapt to the new country which has allowed me to come. When I was in school a student came from Japan, a rural area where the people did not have modern plumbing. I don’t know what she ate but I saw that she did bathe regularly or use deodorant and she smelled awful. I bought her some soap and deodorant and gently introduced her to the expectations of the modern world as kindly as possible. She accepted the hygiene changes and her diet remained the same and was no offense to the rest of us because she accepted and respected the demands put upon her. Immigrants cannot bring the old country with them but they would like to. The children of immigrants are often not encouraged to assimilate but rather to continue the habits and ways, reinforced by religious tradition of the “old country”. Laws against discrimination designed to protect citizens have been used, instead to support anyone from anywhere in their right to offend the citizens. It is reasonable and right to respect those who move to improve their quality of life but assimilation should be a part of this. The children should not be humiliated or insulted but I do believe that they should be taught to respect the country they live in and not just earn money there. This is happening all over the western world and GB and the US and other Modern Western countries are being bullied by PC logic and it has to stop. I think France and Germany grasp the situation much better.

I got picked out by my home economics teacher for wearing Brut aftershave, I got over it. It seems like the problem is one with odour, if you smell it doesnt matter if your black, white, pink, or green with orange spots. I get on public transport every morning and it stinks of rancid garlic, spices and B.O irrelevant of ethnic mix. As our diets change and become more diverse so does our body odour- its simple what goes in must come out. I am sure 50 years ago public transport probably smelt of cabbage and cauliflower lol Thirty kids in a classroom is going to get smelly, before passing judgement I suppose we need to know more about this person before drawing a conclusion. i think the whole issue is being overlooked she taught children from the age of 3. Yeh curry does smell im half asian and i find the smell strong but her spraying the children is simply disgusting, as a teacher she shud have the knowledge that a child is mentally effected by certain discrimination it effects a childs selfesteem etc if she studied at a good universty she would have been taught the ethics and diversty but the cruel woman was too worried abot the smell she should have approached the parents if she did dat to my kid id give her a good slap!!!!!!!

Spraying such things over the children is wrong, though I sympathise if the smell really was that bad.
The problem is intolerance, though life is not perfect and neither are we as individuals. We do have to remember that groups of people who come to live in this country largely remain in groups composed of their own counrymen and in general do not integrate. They live a life based on that of their country of origin even wearing national dress and very often they also live in very large communes do they not? They are different and act differently, do not want to accept a different culture – it begs the question why many come here in the first place.
Please understand I am not a racist, in fact my wife is Asian and has agreed wholeheartedly with these views since coming here 8 years ago and seeing what goes on.

It really surprises me how native British people are treated in their own country… They are disrespected, silenced and suffering from racial discrimination… If there is anything they don’t like and say something about it, they are called arrogant and “racists”. Yes, everyone is right in this country but people who’s country it really is.. and it is more than the country for them, it is home.
I am not english by the way, I came from Ukraine and has been living over here for the last 11 years. It is your country and it is your right to choose how it should be, because if so many nationals came to my country, and tried to claim it as their own I’d sure as hell do something about it. To Midea – thankfully you are not alone in your views as a foreigner living in the UK, I have friends who were not born here, but were more than willing to assimilate our British culture.
So far as speaking up for ourselves is concerned, we cannot, we live in a situation where if we speak up and complain then we must be ‘Nationalists’ or ‘racists’. It is however not us the general population of this country thats to blame, its the so called policies of previous governments that have acted purely to appease any and all EXCEPT those they were elected to represent.
I did however note from the original news article that the complaint originated from the classroom assistant , a Ms. Jan Islam….a very traditional muslim name I don’t think so….I would be willing to place a very large sum of money down that this complaint originated from a convert to Islam who wishes to further their own agenda rather than look out for the welfare of any child in their care.
It was also refreshing to see that finally the government has realised that multi-culturism is failing in this country, and its failed because previous administrations did not ensure that people flooding in even made a contribution to their community or the country at large.
Many of these immigrants are here simply because they know that with our welfare state they get a free ride, these same immigrants who are happy to stand in line with their hands out for our hard earned tax payments, are also usually the first in line to complain about something.
If my above views and comments get me labelled as a racist, then it is a label I will wear with pride. I am BRITISH and damn proud of it.
I cant believe how many comments went before somebody (billie) said the obvious thing.This has nothing to do with racism,intolerance,inequality…it has to do with kids stinking.The fact that it was predominantly asian kids that got sprayed should be a wake up call to their parents to send them to school clean.Im sure they dont naturally smell of curry so a bath should solve the problem.I dare say that miss islam would’ve witnessed white kids being sprayed if they came to class festering in the stale odour of a months curry dinners.And personally i think it is a good and polite thing ms davies is doing for them kids…She is making them aware of their smell so that they may choose to do something about it if they wish.As opposed to idiots like those who penned the first dozen or so comments who would rather let them be oblivious to something that clearly makes many of those around them uncomfortable.
What an insightful article about the story. The writer has displayed thoughtfulness by seeing both sides of the story and I agree that some of the things do not add up.
I agree that *if* this did happen why did it take so long for anyone to know about it? I would be checking over the history between Ms Islam and Mrs Davies as this sounds like it could be a personal attack to have Mrs Davies lose her job. That said, *if* what is claimed by Ms Islam is true then Mrs Davies should not be allowed near children.
As for the comments regarding racism etc, it is a sad state of affairs that we cannot say what we think without being called racist. I do believe in the old adage “when in Rome….”
however, stopping immigration isn’t the answer and never will be. Without immigrants would we be seeing as many Indian restaurants as there are now? And who doesn’t like a good curry?! When we see that Chicken Tikka Masala has replaced the traditional British Roast Dinner as favourite food we can see that we have also changed due to immigration, particularly our eating habits. As far as food is concerned we are happy with multiculturalism so long as ‘the other people’ aren’t near us.
It’s time to realise that the world is a very small place now and we should start learning to live with each other but this has to be done by all parties. Granted, we shouldn’t be walked over by other nations who now live in the UK but that is the fault of Councils and Governments not the people themselves.

Simply NOT true: I eat curry and other smelly Brit food as well and never smell. if you bathe, there is no odour. Clothes, hair, coats and woollies all need laundering. British people used to smell of cabbage, hard boiled eggs, boiled onions, and those terrible eels, and sheer unwashed bodies, etc. Many Bangladeshis in the area are new to cold weather and not well off. They simply need to be told to wash babies and clothes and air homes daily, regardless of cold weather. Only Islam complains about the UK?
It has been said before here by some of the more intelligent people whom have commented, this issue should not be about race. If Ms Davies did do such a thing as to humiliate children, then she is indeed in the wrong. If she was merely doing it however to make fresher her classroom, then I back her entirely. As a teacher for over 20 years, she is obviously set in the ways of a different generation, so maybe all of you self righteous liberals should keep an open mind not only to ‘new’ things, but also to those of the older generations who you may consider ‘uneducated’. As another case in point, I do agree that if it had been a class comprising of 100% white-british students, then such a story would have certainly never arisen. Whenever a minority is involved, the press are all over it. Ok it’s clear both sides have merit.Surely though a key fact has to be her right not to have to sit in a stench for 9 hours a day.Even gag fart spray was banned from being used in public because it was deemed unlawful to subject a person to that kind of discomfort.I personally am allergic or very adverse to garlic.I get a headache with bonus nosebleeds for 3 days if i spend any significant amount of time around it.Air freshener would not help me but if she has a similar less severe reaction to it,then i would think her an idiot not to have a can of glade on stand by.

OH and as for the children not reporting it….who’s to say that they even knew this was something out of the ordinary TO report to their parents. IF it’s been happening to such young children and this is their first school experience how would they know that it’s not suppose to happen? Also the language barrier that their probably was with the students and then trying to go home and relay the events of the day could of very well got lost in translation. Furthermore how many times have you asked your child “How was your day?” only to get the response “good” or “fine”
