El Bulli Closes – So, yesterday I learned of the devastating news that the restaurant El Bulli is closing. El Bulli had been named as the best restaurant in the world 5 times, and charged over $350 for a set menu (though that did include 40 small dishes). It also only opened for six months of the year, had a waiting list longer than you could imagine and more surprisingly never made a profit.
It was also on my list of things to do in life!
El Bulli Closes
I know a lot of people are against paying such astronomical prices for a meal, and it is not something that I do all the time. However, I can appreciate food at it’s finest and am happy to pay the price for the overall experience in, something that El Bulli certainly offered.
Two million people tried for bookings each year, and only 8,000 diners were lucky enough to make the cut. The place booked out in a single day!It was five times named best restaurant in the world by the San Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants produced by Restaurant magazine, based on the opinions of some 800 chefs, critics and industry experts.
As of April 28, 2011 the elBulli website lists that it will close in July of 2011 “On July 30th 2011 elBulli will have completed its journey as a restaurant. We will transform into a creativity center, opening in 2014. Its main objective is to be a think-tank for creative cuisine and gastronomy and will be managed by a private foundation.”
El Bulli, owned by award-winning chef Ferran Adria, will mark the end of a remarkable 27 years with a special sitting for staff and their families.
Mr Adria said El Bulli would re-open but as a culinary think-tank in 2014. He told students in Valencia earlier this month:
El Bulli is not closing, it is transforming itself, because its soul is going to remain.
El Bulli Closes – Now which of the other most expensive restaurants will replace El Bulli on my list of things to do in life?
