California woman banana peel - A woman in California has slipped on a banana peel and is suing as a result. I know this sounds like something out of a cartoon with Tom & Jerry, but it isn’t. This happened in real life.
Ida Valentine, age 58, was walking
down the isle at the 99 Cents Only store minding her business. There was a banana peel in her path. The unthinkable happened. Valentine proceeded to step on the banana peel, lose her balance, and fell down. This would be funny if it didn’t carry such a serious injury.

It happened April of 2010, Valentine slipped on the banana peel in the store. The result of the fall was she suffered a herniated disk and tissue damage as well. She is suing the store for damages.
Valentine has spent $9,000 on medical bills so far and is seeking compensation in the court system. The amount she is seeking hasn’t been specified to the public.
“She fell and landed on her backside,” said Courtney Mikolaj of the Quirk Law Firm in Ventura, California, which is representing her.
According to Mikolaj, the 99 Cents Only store in Fontana, California, didn’t want to go along with a settlement offer to make the case go away. The deep discount retailer has hundreds of stores in the western United States and apparently the time, money and resources to fight this case as they don’t feel responsible for Valentine’s fall.
The settlement offer was for $44,000.
It is hard to believe a person would actually slip and fall on a banana peel, but I guess it is possible. The image just takes be back to my childhood of watching Tom & Jerry.
Tom was determined to catch Jerry and would chase him around the house day in and day out. It was inevitable in one of the scenes, Jerry would strategically place the banana peel for Tom to slip on it.
Tom would never fail the comedic opportunity of a slip and fall, but it wouldn’t be an ordinary slip and fall. Tom would make sure he would slide through the home off balance, knocking down any and everything in his vicinity. Hilarious is the word that comes to my mind.
I am positive Valentine nor the 99 Cents Only organization believe this is a laughing matter. With serious injuries and money on the line, it is not a joke or a game, but to the outside observer it takes our minds back to the days of cartoons when life was so much simpler.
Hopefully, the two sides can work out their differences, but I guess that is why we have a court of law to make these decisions. They will have to decide if a California woman banana peel slip is worthy of compensation.
