Best romantic comedies -We all love a good movie and rom coms are high on the list when it’s a group decision to sit down and have a movie night. A few favorites always pop up and get played again and again but it also sparks up a lot of arguments.
Best Romantic Comedies
There is great debate as to which is the Best Romantic Comedy. I even asked my wife what her favorite was and I think she is still reeling off names as I write this. To me though, a good romantic comedy has to make me laugh. It has to remind me of times in my own life, or people I have known. Truth be told, I only really ever watch Romantic Comedies when I am at home with my wife, it is usually pouring with rain outside and we both just want to lay on the sofa and watch something that will cheer us both up.
The list I have drawn up is in no particular order, in fact I would like your input as to which of these you like the most. If I was put on the spot, I would have to say that it is a tough call, but I would say that Love Actually, Four Weddings and Breakfast At Tiffany’s would be my top three.
Anyway, without further ado… my best romantic comedies:
1. Love Actually – This movie tops many peoples rom coms list. This is an excellent movie following the love lives of 8 people in a loosely interconnected way.
2. You’ve Got Mail – After having seen this film at least a dozen times with my wife, who never tires of it, I actually enjoyed it for the most part. Reminds me of back in the day when AOL and Chat rooms ruled the way. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are both superb and really work well together in this movie.
3. Notting Hill – A classic and well made movie about a book shop owner (Hugh Grant) meeting and falling in love with the most famous movie star in the world (Julia Roberts). The most memorable scene has to be Rhys Ifan’s character standing in his underpants at the doors but this movie also does a great job of stylising London in a very nostalgic and romantic way.
4. Annie Hall – Probably one of the funniest romantic comedies I’ve ever seen. Allen takes the modern romantic comedy format and flips it over on its head to make a masterpiece of cinema. The memorable scenes are too numerous to count. I recommend this movie to anyone who like witty, smart comedies that go against the grain of your normal feel-good comedy.
5. Four Weddings and a Funeral – Hugh Grants stars again with Andie MacDowell. This movie started the rom com style of British cinema that we all now know. Following a group of friends through 4 weddings and a funeral. It’s a bit predictable but still a very enjoyable movie.
6. The Apartment – The Academy Award for Best Picture of 1960 has not lost one bit of it’s charm. The Apartment is Billy Wilder’s satirical look at office politics and the Man In The Grey Flannel Suit. It was also the last black & white film to win the Best Picture Oscar until Schindler’s List
7. French Kiss – When a women heads off to France to confront her runaway fiance she finds herself caught up in a smuggling issue after Kevin Kline, playing a french thief, plants a grape vine and a necklace in her bag, oddly they end up in a whirlwind unconventional romance. Kevin Kline is typically hilarious and really does help make this movie.
8.Breakfast At Tiffany’s – The classic romantic comedy starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard. I have seen this so many times that I feel I am starting to learn the words. I absolutely love this film. From the memorable dialogue, that first scene with Holly standing in front of Tiffany’s, the cocktail party, Holly Golightly singing “Moon River” on her guitar, the cat and of course the final scene between Holly and Paul.
9. Manhattan – Not your typical romantic comedy as Woody Allen is at the directing Helm. A divorced man who is dating a high school girl ends up falling for his friends mistress in this twisted incestuous love tale. You need to pay attention but it is a great and hilarious movie.
10. Sense & Sensibility – Don’t miss this movie! It’s a brilliant adaptation of the Jane Austen classic and simply lovely to watch. Emma Thompson did an excellent job on the screenplay, and deservedly won an Oscar for her efforts.
Best Romantic Comedies – How is that for a list? I hope I managed to jog your memory on one or two classic romantic comedies. Are there any that I should absolutely include, would any of these not make your list of best romantic comedies?
