Arabian Wild Unicorn Back Extinction

Arabian Wild Unicorn Back Extinction – “Did somebody say unicorns?”  Well, yes we did.  “Are unicorns really real?”  Well, no…They’re not.  “Then why did you say unicorns?”  Well, the story is that someone saw one of these animals from the side, and thought that the two horns in fact looked like one…so they called it a unicorn.

“Well that’s pretty stupid.”  Don’t look at me, I never called it a unicorn I’m just saying what they’re calling it. It looks more like a goat with long horns.

It seems that the Arabian Oryx, also known as a Wild ‘Unicorn’, a species thought that was in the brink of extinction nearly three decades ago, was brought back –almost literally from the dead because they thought that the last one had been shot in 1972—up to a population of almost 1,000 Oryx’s in the Arabian Peninsula desert.

All of this is thanks to longtime efforts of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) that has had this animal in a meticulous breeding program for the past three decades.  The general director of the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi says that “To have brought the Arabian Oryx back from the brink of extinction is a major feat and a true conservation success story, one which we hope will be repeated many times over for the other threatened species.”  They apparently only started with six “Wild Unicorns” in 1972, and made it up to the thousand in just forty years.

Arabian Wild Unicorn Back Extinction – The IUCN is stating that they are releasing these Oryx into the wild once again, but there are going to be placed in areas where hunting is prohibited.  This is certainly not the only animal that is close to extinction, but it’s great to know that a few fighters out there are doing the best they can for many of the dying species.
