Random & Personal, Travel

The first time I ever visited the United States was in the Summer 2006 (unless you count waiting at Detroit Airport in 2001!). I was actually on vacation in Montreal, where I now live, and my partner decided that it would be fun to go visit her family in Vermont.

When we got to Vermont, her brother said he was going away for the weekend to work at a sky diving drop zone in Maine, and on the way back we could stop in Boston to go see their sister who is studying at Harvard.

We had a great weekend in Maine and I got my first taste of small town USA. Then on the drive back towards Boston, I got my first taste of big city USA. The looming buildings were huge and reminded me of a stretched London, UK (my home town). I was really excited but everyone else had been there plenty of times, so it was nothing new. The sun was beating down on us and as as we approached Boston our speed decreased and traffic increased. I was given a typical Bostonian welcome, in fact it is the same welcome given by most cities.

After fighting our way into town we encountered literally thousands of people who were on a charity walk through the center. Many of the main roads had been closed off and we had to wait for a long time, but the weather was good and people were cheering so we kept in high spirits.

I was still wired, and when we picked up their sister we then took public transport to Harvard Square. We were greeted by the surprise of a street festival. What a lucky day we picked! Bands were playing, food from many cultures were being served. It was amazing.

After stuffing out on fine Indian Cuisine, and I mean it was very fine! We walked around enjoying the small craft stools and I purchased a typical tourist treat, a Harvard hooded top.

Then off to the real Harvard campus we went. It was very grand and I recognized parts from various movies. We were walking around and taking silly photos and one of us, I can’t remember who it was, managed to write ‘I am stupid’ on one of the classroom chalk boards.

I really want to visit again sometime soon.

We never used a guide or anythinga and I am sure that I missed out hugely on the tourist aspect. If you are looking for guides and things to do in Boston then Trusted Tours & Attractions have lots to offer in Boston and many more places too. They provide anything from Key West Snorkeling to a moonlight tour of Washington DC, family vacation ideas and much more.
