SpaceX delays rocket launch because of bad weather”

The California-based private space firm is expected to launch 10 Iridium NEXT communications satellites from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

The accident investigation team worked systematically through an extensive fault tree analysis and concluded that one of the three composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) inside the second stage liquid oxygen (LOX) tank failed.

After placing the Iridium satellite constellation in its orbit, the Falcon 9 rocket will attempt to land on a floating barge, from where SpaceX will retrieve it so it can refitted and reused.

That marked a setback for the company and its founder Elon Musk, who wants to revolutionize the launch industry by making rocket components reusable.

SpaceX has conducted several flyback missions as part of Florida launches after the Falcon fulfilled the rocket's primary mission.

The FAA issued license for SpaceX's return-to-flight mission after accepting its findings from a four-month-long investigation into the September 1st Falcon 9 rocket explosion that had destroyed the rocket as well as a commercial satellite during a countdown test. The company plans to reconfigure its helium tanks and load the gas at a warmer temperature.

The company believes the problem happens when the helium is pumped into too cold oxygen trapped in these pools and them turning the oxygen into a solid. The company said the long-term solution will be to redesign the helium canisters, which are made of an aluminum liner and a carbon overwrap. The September Falcon 9 explosion caused the company to temporarily halt its launches causing about more or less 70 backlogs in the schedule and billions of monetary losses. The launch is slated to take place from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on January 14th, at 12:54PM ET.

Iridium Chief Executive Matt Desch issued a prepared statement on Friday, further confirming that it's only a matter of time before SpaceX resumes its Falcon 9 launches.

Iridium, a Virginia-based global communications provider, has been patiently waiting since a year ago for available taxis to space. Near the end of October, SpaceX anticipated the investigation would be complete in time for a 2016 launch.

Thales Alenia Space and Orbital ATK are manufacturing the 81 Iridium Next satellites in a plant in Gilbert, Arizona.
