Beheaded, butchered: At least 33 killed in Brazil prison revolt”

In 2014, there were 622,202 people imprisoned in Brazil, the fourth highest total globally after the US, China and Russian Federation. Recent austerity measures have further undercut prison authorities' efforts. In another of the riots in the state, four prisoners died.

Brazilian authorities said Tuesday that the inmates responsible for the killings of 56 rivals at this prison will be transferred to high security federal institutions in addition to being prosecuted.

The chaos was reportedly quelled after the Special Operations Battalion and military police intervened.

There are 1.67 prisoners for every available space in Brazil - and a staggering 2.59 prisoners in Amazonas state for every space, according to the report.

A crackdown on violent and drug-related offences in recent years has seen the prison population soar since the turn of the century.

There are three pods inside that population: J pod contains 24 killer whales; K pod has 19; and L pod has 35. Although she was officially known as J2, those who followed her travels called her Granny.

At least 93 prisoners have been killed in three separate prison riots this week in Brazil, sparking fears that months of violence between drug gangs who control numerous country's prisons was spiraling out of control.

In all, the federal government will invest US$ 134 million to be used in the construction of new prisons and the improvement of the security systems of state prisons - transfer of technology to block cell phone reception and purchase of body scanners. There were 1,475 prisoners at the Monte Cristo prison nearly double its capacity of 750 and 15 officers at the time of the incident, Jornal O Globo reported.

This riot took place during visiting hours, when prisoners broke padlocks and released other inmates held in another wing the prison. As of Thursday afternoon, only 65 had been recaptured.

Roraima Secretary of Justice and Citizenship, Uziel de Castro Júnior, has blamed the attacks on the First Command of the Capital (PCC), Brazil's largest organized crime group based in Sao Paulo.
