Indonesia puts military ties with Australia on hold”

"Jakarta governor's politically-motivated 'blasphemy" trial genuinely contravenes Pancasila, so odd cause cited for Australian-Indonesian military cooperation problem, ' the Canberra-based think tank said.

'It is something we would not countenance.I would hope at the conclusion of the inquiry, when we're able to indicate to Indonesia the steps that have been taken in Australia to address any of these concerns, we'll be able to discuss resuming the relationship across the board then, ' she said.

Kompas reported that a telegram instruction, dated December 29 from Indonesian military commander General Gatot Nurmantyo, instructed that all military co-operation, including training with the Australian Defence Force, be suspended.

Indonesian Special Forces group Kopassus trains with the Special Air Service at Perth's Campbell Barracks.

"The suspension will remain in effect until the technical matters are corrected, " said major general Wuryanto, a spokesman for Indonesia's military, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

According to a report in Indonesian newspaper Kompas on Wednesday, the Indonesian military sent a letter to their Australian counterparts warning that cooperation could be suspended and then the head of the country's military, Gatot Nurmantyo, sent a telegram putting this into force on December 29.

"[The co-operation], this termination is temporary", Wuryanto told another Indonesian media outlet Koran Sindo.

Van Gerwen eyeing the final prize
The Dutchman will face two-time defending champion Gary Anderson in the final of the world championships in London this morning. But three days into 2017, he now has the world crown again after defeating Anderson with a performance of supreme brilliance.

"Late past year concerns were raised by an Indonesian TNI officer about some teaching materials and remarks at an army language training facility in Australia", she said.

"Therefore, it is appropriate for Indonesia and Australian co-operation to be temporarily suspended and for the Indonesian defence ministry to officially object".

Australia and Indonesia has had patchy relations following a diplomatic falling out in April 2015 when the Indonesian government executed two Australian nationals for drug offenses.

But other Indonesian officials were just as confused and upset as Australian authorities were.

She said the military were preparing for the February training exercise and was unsure if Indonesia would participate.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said at the time that maritime co-operation between the nations was strong and included training and personnel exchanges.
