Scarlett Johansson is 2016's highest earning actress

Scarlett Johansson is 2016's highest earning actress”

Following close behind Johansson are her Civil War co-stars Chris Evans and Robert Downey, Jr., who both tied for second place at 1.5 billion due to their respective roles as Captain America and Iron Man.

The box office collection of Captain America: Civil War and Hail Caesar has resulted in Scarlett Johansson becoming the top-grossing actor of 2016.

As per the Forbes list, Scarlett earned in the year of 2016 a mind-boggling $1.2 billion at the global box office.

The actor topped the list after her films raked in $1.2bn (£977m) globally over the past 12 months.

Still, it's important to note Forbes" list only counts roles in which actors received top billing, and no voice-only performances - hence it does not include the $966 million box office haul of "The Jungle Book, ' in which Johansson voiced the python Kaa.

Forbes assembled the list using global data from Box Office Mojo through December 27, discounting animated films and films in which the actor had only a cameo or other small part.

Uber picks up and takes its self-driving cars to Arizona
Pictures released today showed the cars being transported out of California on the back of trucks. Talkoff further noted that there aren't state or federal laws governing self-driving cars.

Curiously, it was one more modestly successful film which tipped her into first place: 'Hail, Caesar!', the underrated 1940s-set comedy from the Coen Brothers, which - despite a star-studded cast including Johansson, George Clooney, Josh Brolin, Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill - took only $63 million worldwide off a $22 million budget.

Following Scarlett in second place are her co-stars Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr.

Johansson, 32, edged out her Captain America co-stars Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr, who tied for second place with 1.15 billion USA dollars (£937.7 million) each. The movie was the only 2016 film for both actors.

Australian actress Margot Robbie, who enjoyed a break-out year, placed fourth with $1.1 billion thanks to roles in two Warner Bros movies "Suicide Squad" and "The Legend of Tarzan".

Ryan Reynolds, 40, reached No. 8 with "Deadpool", in which he played the titular role, and Felicity Jones, 33, hit No. 9 with "Star Wars: Rogue One". Johansson came third on that particular list.
