1984 book sales – George Orwell’s classic 1984 is an often quoted and referenced piece, a book that everyone knows roughly about and everyone has seen and heavily influenced movies and publications. Every time a government does something related to knowing more about us, expanding secret operations or things that are seen as infringing on freedom the book 1984 is brought up.
But it seems that many people have either not read it or not read it for a long time as a recent scandal has shot sales of the book through the roof.
The scandal involving the United States government watching and sorting through phone and internet records almost in discriminatorily (in other words, everyone’s stuff!) has sparked an interest in dystopian literature revolving around big government and surveillance.
So it’s not just 1984, Brave New World has seen strong sales too and of course movies like Brazil will be seeing raising viewing figures.
Many feel we are heading for an Orwellian nightmare and in many cases, especially in regards to infringements on what we can say and do, it does seem there is some element of truth to the paranoia.

Everyone is watching and listening to what we do, however do they care! For the most part no, but with records kept something you did many moons ago could of course come back to haunt and you have to ask about the fairness of that.
Surely the best thing the gov can do is bug every copy of 1984 and put it on a super cheap sale in Barnes and Noble! Then they will have to all the conspiracy and anti-gov talk they like! Obviously I don’t mean that!
Oh and if you want a copy of 1984, Brave New World or Brazil, why not check out Amazon (yes I get a small commission for sales through these links ). I can’t guarantee they won’t be bugged!!!!
How do you think the balance between monitoring for potential threats and watching the general public can be achieved?
